In a bid to get this community alive and kicking (even just a little bit) I have a question or two for everyone...

- Do you believe there is such a thing as writer's block?
- If so, how do you get over it?

I've been sitting here annoyed at how little I've written over the course of the last year and I'm interested in trying various ways to get out of my block so if you have any tried and tested methods, or maybe you heard a handy tip once, let me know so I can put them to the test!

Holy hell yes I do!

To break it...
A change in writing routine, a new place, a new coffee...anything along environment.

I read. I will pick up a genre that I am not too keen on, or read a tonne of short stories (esp cause I can eat those up to jog something).
I will also read mythologies and fairy tales to see if they stir something up, but that is in line with my particular style of writing.

I will read books like "Novel Voices", advice from other writers.

I will ask friends for "seeds", a phrase with a word count and genre attached and I have to write something within those guidelines.
For example, one simply gave me the word "Don't", fiction, 1200wds.
I came up with 3 concepts on the spot.
(btw, that is my favorite way to break it).

Watching. People, movies, more people. Sometimes I can form a character idea and something new will evolve around that.

Hope something helps!

I kind of asked the first question because there are some writers out there who don't believe in Writers Block. Good for them, I think before also thinking, gits.

Those are all great suggestions although I'm mostly intrigued by the "seeds" thing. How on earth did you come up with three concepts for "Don't"? That's pretty impressive. I shall have to employ some of these ideas, I hope they work!

My head went to..

"What situations would someone use the word Don't in? Now, how do I make them interesting?"

I came up with..rape, someone being dumped, a person facing fear almost immediately.
Then I put my own spin on each.

It's a group of us friends that do the seeds. We've had some awesome ones too.
"Feather Light" was one, and one of the guys had the best spin on it and that really inspired me. The rules are, we have to share our writing and we have to critique someones, thus, it helps us grow and kick us out of ruts.

Perhaps we could do something like that on here, once a week or so?

That would be a fabulous idea. It'd certainly get me going again! I shall put together a post and see what the rest of the community think about it. If there's enough takers it would definitely be worth doing.
